Clinical supervision for child psychotherapists and counselling professionals who specialise in working with parents and infants, children, adolescents and young people. This encompasses family work and work with parents and parental couples.
I offer a containing and reflective supervision space where complex dynamics within relationships and family systems can be fruitfully and supportively considered as guides to clinical practice.
Often, the concerns which families initially bring (the reason for referral) may be a small part of the difficulties they really need help with. Many worries or pre-occupations which children have, can’t easily be solved in a rational way.
Many children experience childhood traumas which affect their subsequent development. Adverse childhood experiences, are all too frequent and many children are growing up in families where the impact of trauma and trans-generational trauma is not understood. Increasingly children receive mental health diagnosis – such as autism and ADHD – at a young age, but they and their families may still be in need of appropriate therapeutic help.
Close attention to, and mindful practice within, the emotional communication and relational interaction of transferential exchanges within the clinical encounter, often illuminates underlying cuases otherwise obscured.
Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic supervision facilitates the exploration of unconscious dynamics in your clinical work. Thinking through complex cases and emotionally demanding work, we will sensitively reflect upon: the therapeutic relationship; the wider system of the family and organisations such as schools, social care, medical health professionals and youth services; the child’s immediate and broader environment. Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is a developmental approach which recognises the continual states of flux which children and young people encounter as they move, sometimes rapidly, through developmental changes. Therapeutic work with children and adolescents, often benefits from con-current work with parents, who can develop greater insight into themselves and their parenting approaches.
